In the picturesque Konavle region, just half an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik, lies a small haven of living heritage — AR Atelier, an arts and crafts studio that has been preserving the tradition of silk-making and Konavle embroidery for more than 18 years. This atelier is not only a gallery of handmade works but also a living testimony to the centuries-old bond between people and nature, where visitors can quite literally touch history.

Konavle is well known for its traditional folk costume, with silk and intricate embroidery as its most distinctive features. Although silk is no longer produced in households, AR Atelier continues to make it — as a symbol of love for heritage and a sustainable way of life.

The Path of Silk – From Silkworm to Magic Thread

The workshop at AR Atelier in Gruda offers participants an authentic experience of traditional silk production, as practiced in Konavle for centuries. Through an interactive presentation, visitors learn about the historical, social, and ethnological context of silk-making and then witness the fascinating natural process — the life cycle of the silkworm.

From April to November, guests can observe every stage of the silkworm’s life — from tiny eggs to cocoons that yield the precious silk thread. Each cocoon hides nearly one kilometre of fine silk, later used in traditional Konavle embroidery, recognizable for its precise, geometric patterns.

Tailored Workshops and Presentations

The presentations and workshops are designed for a wide range of audiences — from individual visitors to corporate teams seeking an inspiring and educational incentive experience.

The programme typically includes a brief introduction to the history and tradition of silk-making in Konavle, an overview of the silkworm’s life stages, a demonstration of thread production and spinning, and finally, an introduction to Konavle embroidery and folk costumes.

Workshops are available in Croatian, English, and French, and can accommodate groups of up to 35 participants. They can also be customised — for example, by including a practical silk-thread making session, a mini spinning competition, or a tasting of local Konavle delicacies.

An Authentic and Inspiring Experience

A visit to this unique atelier is a truly memorable experience that blends tradition, education, creativity, and connection. Participants leave not only enriched with new knowledge but also with a deep respect for the craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.

For anyone wishing to add a touch of cultural identity and sustainable creativity to their incentive programme in Dubrovnik, the silk-making workshop in Konavle is the perfect choice — authentic, meaningful, and unforgettable.
