Opera Maria Stuart
A co-production of the Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin and the Marin Držić Theatre, in collaboration with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra.
Maria Stuart is one of the few operas—and therefore a truly special one—in which two equally important and powerful female characters take centre stage: the reigning Queen Elizabeth and the imprisoned former Queen Mary Stuart. In literary and Romantic interpretations of history, the two have also been referred to as sisters, although the historical facts were somewhat different.
The libretto was written by Giuseppe Bradari, drawing extensively on the famous play of the same name by Friedrich Schiller, one of the leading dramatists of literary Romanticism.
