The lecture will focus on 19th-century emigration caused by the decline of viticulture in Dalmatia, as well as on the personal achievements of people from the Elaphiti Islands and the Dubrovnik Littoral in their new communities.
Particular attention will be given to the lives, work, and philanthropy of Pasko Baburica from Koločep, Ivo Kuljevan from Lopud, Federiko Glavić from Šipan, and the Mihanović brothers from the Dubrovnik Littoral. All of them were successful entrepreneurs, but also great philanthropists. Although they did not engage in politics, they strongly opposed Italian claims to our coast. They earned recognition and respect around the world, yet remained largely overlooked in their homeland.
Historian Dr. Aida Cvjetković will place particular emphasis on these individuals, whose actions and dedication helped transform both their homeland and their new places of residence. She will also seek to answer the question of whether—and to what extent—we have ever repaid them for all their contributions and acts of philanthropy.
