Memorial Room of Dubrovnik Defenders – Sponza Palace

Located in the Sponza Palace, the Memorial Room was established by the City of Dubrovnik as a lasting tribute and expression of gratitude to the Dubrovnik defenders, as well as all Croatian defenders who selflessly gave their lives in defence of and liberation of southern Croatia, the most deserving for ensuring that Dubrovnik remained and will forever be – the City of Freedom.

The contemplative space, fitting for the sacrifice made by the defenders, is divided into three sections. The central section displays the fallen Dubrovnik defenders with their biographies, photographs, and a lamp that symbolizes that the light of the candle burns for each fallen defender. The introductory section of the Memorial Room provides information about the beginnings and course of the Homeland War in the Dubrovnik area, while at the centre of the room, a floor map of the historic core of Dubrovnik marks the sites of aggressor attacks, along with a tribute to the fallen defenders.

The third section is equipped with interactive LED displays that allow visitors to understand the Homeland War in this area. It contains five thematic units: Fallen Defenders in the Dubrovnik Area, Course of the Homeland War, War Units, Destruction and Reconstruction, and Photo and Video Documentation. The Memorial Room also includes a list of fallen Croatian defenders from other parts of Croatia who gave their lives to defend and liberate the Dubrovnik region. The list contains the names and surnames of the fallen Croatian defenders, organized by their military activities and units of the Croatian Army.
