By a decision of the government of the Dubrovnik Republic in 1546, Jews were allowed to settle within the city walls. This officially marks the establishment of the Dubrovnik Ghetto in Žudioska Street. One of the houses was converted into a synagogue in 1652, whose interior is in the Baroque style with slight modifications, and it remains preserved to this day as one of the oldest in Europe. On the first floor, there is a museum with a collection of religious artefacts, archival documents, and particularly its Torahs, dating from the 13th to the 17th century, which testify to six centuries of history of the Dubrovnik Jewish community. In addition to the synagogue, the Jewish community in Dubrovnik also has its cemetery at Boninovo and a small Jewish fountain at Pile.
