The Homeland War Museum Dubrovnik is a specialized historical museum located in the Imperial Fortress. During the Homeland War from 1991 to 1995, the Imperial Fortress was the front line of Dubrovnik's defence and became a symbol of the city's heroic defence. The permanent exhibition "Dubrovnik in the Homeland War 1991 - 1995" opened in 2008.
The exhibition is presented on the ground floor of the fortress and consists of four thematic sections: the fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik and the history of the Fort Imperial structure; Serbian-Montenegrin aggression in 1991; Days of Victory - Liberation operations by the Croatian Army; the suffering of the population, civilian objects, and cultural monuments in the Dubrovnik area.
The exhibition portrays the course of the Homeland War in the Dubrovnik area, from the beginning of the Serbian-Montenegrin aggression in 1991 to the victorious advancement of the Croatian Army to the internationally recognized borders of the Republic of Croatia, the return of displaced and refugee populations to temporarily occupied areas, and the conclusion of the war in 1995. The exhibition includes original documents, artistic and documentary photographs from the Homeland War, weaponry, mines and explosives, parts of military equipment, war flags of units, authentic recordings and video footage, wartime maps, and captured weapons from the defenders. The terrace of the Imperial Fortress offers a stunning view of the historical core of Dubrovnik and the Elaphite Islands.
