Dubrovnik on the International Light Art Map
Ahead of the sixth edition of the Lumiart Dubrovnik Festival of Light, taking place from 16 to 18 October and organised by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board in cooperation with Pixel Design, with the support of the City of Dubrovnik, the festival was presented at an international gathering of leading light festival representatives in Bucharest, further strengthening its presence on the international light and digital art scene.
As Dubrovnik prepares for three evenings during which its historic city centre will be illuminated in an entirely new light, Lumiart has spent the past few days as part of the international festival scene in Bucharest. At the annual meeting of the International Light Festivals Organisation (ILO), an international network bringing together light festival directors, curators, producers and artists from across Europe and around the world, Lumiart presented Dubrovnik as a unique stage where historic architecture, contemporary art and new technologies converge.
The gathering took place as part of the tenth anniversary edition of Spotlight – International Light Art Festival Bucharest, one of the prominent light festivals in this part of Europe. Participation in this prestigious international event created opportunities for new partnerships, artist and art project exchanges, and closer connections with leading figures in the contemporary light and digital art scene.
“It is important to us that Lumiart is not viewed merely as a three-day event in Dubrovnik. We develop the festival throughout the year through ongoing contact with artists, producers and directors of other festivals. Here in Bucharest, we have the opportunity to present our work in Dubrovnik directly and create opportunities for future international collaborations. Dubrovnik has a remarkable advantage thanks to its historic architecture and cultural heritage, which provide an almost ideal setting for contemporary art, 3D mapping and new technologies,” said Tomislav Nadramija, Artistic Director of the Lumiart Festival.
Membership in the ILO network enables Lumiart to maintain a continuous presence within the international professional community, guided by a clear long-term vision: to bring renowned international artists and productions to Dubrovnik while also developing artistic projects that can travel from Dubrovnik to other festivals across Europe and around the world.
From 16 to 18 October, Dubrovnik’s historic city centre will once again become a meeting point for light, architecture, art and technology. This year’s edition is dedicated in particular to Marin Getaldić, marking the 400th anniversary of his death. His research into optics, mirrors and the refraction of light provides a natural link between Dubrovnik’s history and contemporary light art.
Lumiart’s participation in Bucharest therefore represents more than a presentation of the festival: it is also an opportunity to promote Dubrovnik as a city that connects its cultural heritage with contemporary art, technology and the international festival scene.
