The origins of the museum date back to 1872 when the Indigenous Museum was founded, which contained a small collection of cultural-historical artworks. More systematic collection began after World War II, and the collection was housed in the Rector's Palace, which opened to the public in 1950.
The permanent exhibition, located in the Rector's Palace, consists of material of significant cultural, historical, and artistic value, covering the period from the mid-14th century to the early 20th century. It also recreates the authentic space of historical events, showcasing the state offices, courtroom, and prisons on the ground floor, as well as the chapel, representative salons, and the rector's apartments with a study, central room, and bedroom on the upper floor.
Exhibitions such as "Dubrovnik Money, Medals, Seals, Coats of Arms, and Measures," "Weapons," "Goldsmithing in Dubrovnik," and "Inventory of the State Pharmacy Domus Christi" are displayed in the mezzanine and complement the thematic aspects of the permanent exhibition.
