Church of St Saviour

1 min čitanja
Crkva sv. Spasa

As a sign of gratitude for being spared from the terrifying earthquake of 1520, this votive church was built in the same year and dedicated to St. Saviour. It was a decision made by the Dubrovnik Senate, and the depth of their sincere thanks may, in some miraculous way, be reflected in the fact that this small church remained untouched during the Great Earthquake of 1667. Preserved in its original form, it stands today as a true example of Dubrovnik Renaissance architecture. It was built by Korčula master Petar Andrijić and completed in 1528. Legend has it that noblewomen of Dubrovnik participated in its construction with special devotion, personally carrying wood and stone for the building. Located between the Franciscan Monastery and the City Walls, the church's meditative interior becomes a cultural space in the summer months, hosting exhibitions by Dubrovnik painters and chamber music performances.
