The Dominican Monastery and the Church of the Holy Cross in Gruž were founded in 1427.
The Renaissance-style monastery with a cloister was expanded during the 15th and 16th centuries, while the original Gothic church was oriented east–west, located on the site of today's roadway.
In 1943, both the church and the monastery were severely damaged. The restoration of the church, now occupying part of the former monastery space and oriented north–south, was completed in 1955.
