Archaeological Site of the Upper Corner Tower

The medieval metal foundry under Minčeta from the late 15th century, discovered during the restoration of the Upper Corner Tower, is an exceptionally valuable archaeological site and a unique space that testifies to the industrial-economic branch during the time of the Dubrovnik Republic. In the foundry, which covers about 600 square metres, gunpowder was prepared, bronze was cast, bells and utilitarian objects were shaped, and the most important activity was the production of weapons, which were exported to the Mediterranean and the Balkans. The foundry operated until the 17th century, when, after the Great Earthquake of 1667, it was buried.

In terms of area and preservation, it is one of the best-preserved sites of this type in Europe, and after restoration by the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities, it was opened to the public in July 2017.
