Dubrovnik will once again become a meeting point for the international scientific community this September. From the 21st to the 25th of September 2026, the city will host ApplMath26 – the 13th Conference on Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing, bringing together researchers and experts from various fields of applied mathematics, scientific computing and engineering.
The conference is intended not only for mathematicians but also for specialists from other disciplines who use mathematics as a tool in their scientific and professional work. The aim of the gathering is to encourage the exchange of ideas, methods and problems across different disciplines and to create opportunities for new interdisciplinary connections.
The organisers are the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, the Croatian Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics (CRO-MATH-IN), and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Osijek.
From Numerical Mathematics to Engineering
The ApplMath26 programme will cover a broad spectrum of topics, including mathematical methods in continuum mechanics, numerical linear algebra, scientific computing, ordinary and partial differential equations, integral equations, singular perturbations, numerical mathematics, optimisation and engineering.
The conference's international dimension is further strengthened by its invited plenary speakers. They include Martin Ehler from the University of Vienna, Stefan Güttel from the University of Manchester, Barbara Kaltenbacher from the University of Klagenfurt, Yuji Nakatsukasa from the University of Oxford, Anna-Karin Tornberg from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Julien Vovelle from CNRS and the University of Lyon, and Thomas Wick from Leibniz University Hannover.
The Scientific Committee brings together experts from institutions including UC Berkeley, the University of Zagreb, EPFL, the University of Dubrovnik, the Czech Academy of Sciences, the University of Osijek and TU Dortmund, further underlining the international character of the event.
Dubrovnik as an Established Destination for Scientific Conferences
ApplMath26 also has a special connection with Dubrovnik. The first two conferences in the series were held in Dubrovnik in 1999 and 2001, while the city once again hosted the event with ApplMath24 in 2024. In the intervening years, conferences were held on the Brijuni Islands and in Zadar, Trogir and Šibenik, helping the event develop a recognisable tradition in Croatia spanning more than two decades.
This year's edition will be held at the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies (CAAS) of the University of Zagreb. For organisers of international scientific and professional gatherings, the choice highlights one of Dubrovnik's important advantages as a conference destination, the opportunity to combine high-level academic content with a unique historical and cultural setting.
