Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum was established in 1949 on the initiative of the Adriatic Institute of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (today HAZU). The initial museum collection was created in 1941 through donations from Dubrovnik citizens, and after its official founding, the collection was systematically and strategically built through purchases, donations from citizens, and items from underwater archaeological excavations organized in the Dubrovnik aquarium.

The museum systematically collects, processes, exhibits, and publishes museum material related to the maritime history of Dubrovnik, dating back to ancient times, and holds a collection of more than 11,000 items. Several thematic sections have been conceived, which chronologically illustrate the development of Dubrovnik's maritime history: From Late Antiquity to the Fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik; Maritime History of the Dubrovnik Region in the 19th Century; Maritime History of the Dubrovnik Region in the 20th Century.

The Maritime Museum is one of the leading museums in Croatia focused on maritime themes and is the best place to explore Dubrovnik's rich maritime heritage.
