House of Marin Držić

The House of Marin Držić is a dynamic cultural institution within the culture of the City of Dubrovnik, with its exhibition, publishing, and educational activities, as well as special events, aiming to become a scientific and research centre for studying and promoting the life and work of Croatia's greatest playwright – Marin Držić.

Marin Držić was born in Dubrovnik, probably in 1508. After his education in Italy and travels across Europe, he returned to his hometown, where he wrote and first staged twelve of his well-known dramas. He died in Venice in 1567, where he was buried in the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, better known as Zanipoli.

The permanent exhibition of the House of Marin Držić chronologically tells the story of Marin Držić's fascinating and turbulent life, presenting all of his works and depicting the Renaissance period in which he lived and created. Our goal is to bring Držić closer to the modern audience and to provide a place where every visitor can travel back in time to the Renaissance and experience the life of Dubrovnik during that era.
